Broadcast and Media Com Students Strike Success in Job World

Six Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) students were hired as full-time employees in media-related jobs at the end of the spring 2015 semester. Two broadcast journalism graduates, a media communication graduate and two broadcast journalism students who are still attending PLNU, were hired at One America News Network (OANN) in San Diego.

Angel Zamora, a media communication graduate, was hired as a Production Assistant, broadcast journalism graduate Katie Seals is a News Writer and Greta Wall, also a broadcast journalism graduate, is a News Anchor for the 5, 7 and 9:00am weekend newscasts.

“It feels awesome to actually be doing what I went to school for so quickly after graduation. I love it,Wall said.

Ross Nederhoff and Sam Watkins were both junior broadcast journalism students when they were hired at OANN. They stayed in San Diego for the summer to work full-time and then switched to part-time when the fall semester started back to squeeze in their last semesters of college.

Working at OANN while still in school taught Watkins and Nederhoff the value of newsroom experience and breaking news coverage.Im grateful for the opportunity and Im trying to learn as much as possible. It has definitely motivated me to chase my dreams of being a reporter,Watkins said.

Hilary Zeber, a media communication graduate, was also hired full time upon graduation at a company called AwesomenessTV, which is owned by Dreamworks. She works as an Assistant Producer on a show called Top Five Live.

“I just the love the job, said Zeber. Im so excited to have gotten a job right out of college in the field that I studied.Zebers favorite moment so far was working on AwesomenessTVs summer web series Beachin.” “We went to the beach every Wednesday to film and that was such a blast, she said. Its also been cool seeing how everything I learned at Loma is actually being applied at my job now.

Professor of Media Communications Dr. Alan Hueth says the depth of what they worked on at PLNU, like the bi-weekly newscast Coastline, along with their diverse range of skills in many TV and film programs, is what most likely got these students jobs right out of, and during college.

“I'm thankful and very proud of all of our students who obtain jobs in the media right out of college, said Hueth. It's a very competitive job environment, and it says a lot about them and our program.
